Mummified Cupcakes

31 Oct

Well hello! And Happy Halloween!!! Those of you who know me know I am absolutely obsessed with this time of year…I get giddy when October rolls around. So i decided to make some super fun cupcakes. Courtney wasn’t able to join me on this post as they are preparing to go out of town soon.

Let me start by saying since I was undergoing such a big challenge of making fondant for the first time I decided to use a box cake and a can of frosting. So please forgive me this time.
I chose a lemon cake mix and just a plain vanilla and followed the directions on the box to prepare the cakes.

Then I let them cool really well and pulled out my Marshmallow fondant
Let me just tell you the lady who wrote that recipe vastly over estimates the ease of making it, this was my first attempt.

The second attempt I armed myself with crisco as I saw recommended on another site and covered my hands and the cutting board :) I refrigerated it until the next day and rolled it out and cut it into strips for the mummies.

Then I mixed up some of that vanilla frosting into a nasty grey green color cause I thought it would look fabulous peeking out from beneath the strips! And I was not disappointed.

I then coated all my cupcakes in a thin layer and added the eyes, which I used red hots for.

Then i started laying the strips on until they looked like mummies!

I am not going to lie this was incredibly time consuming and at times very frustrating! And next time I think I will just pipe flat strips of frosting on instead of going thru all the trouble of making the fondant. But I do love the finished product :)

I hope everyone has a fantastic Halloween!! Be safe have fun and dont eat too much candy!
